Word From Wildwood

Get Ready for Family Camp 3!

If you're registered for Family Camp 3: August 28-31, you should have received a reminder postcard directing you here! (Thanks for checking out the blog, and supporting our efforts to send you less paper!)

We're excited that we'll see you at Family Camp soon, and we hope that you're looking forward to your time with us. If you've not yet returned all your completed camp forms, please mail them to the Wildwood office in Lincoln, MA, immediately, or let us know that you’ll bring the completed forms with you to camp on August 28. (Don’t forget copies of your health insurance cards!) If you need a new copy of camp forms or the camp handbook, visit our website to download them. The handbook also contains a suggested packing list (p. 12) to assist you as you prepare for camp.

If you need driving directions to Wildwood, look in your camp handbook (p. 18), or get printable directions from our website. (Once you get to Rindge, NH, using a GPS or online directions is inadvisable.)

A few reminders and suggestions:

  • Wildwood is a large camp, and you'll be happiest if you wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. We ask all our staff and campers to wear shoes or sandals with a heel strap (not flip flops), except at the waterfront or in the shower.
  • Wildwood is a Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. For the health and safety of campers, staff, and wildlife, family pets may not be brought to Wildwood.
  • For everyone’s safety, please plan not to use personal transportation like your own bikes and boats while you’re on site at Wildwood. (Strollers for small children are just fine!)
  • Wildwood is a drug- and alcohol-free environment. Please do not bring alcohol or illegal drugs with you to camp or use them while at camp. Adult program participants may use tobacco products only in designated areas away from children.
  • For high ropes activities, participating campers must be large enough for safety equipment to fit properly (usually age 6+).
  • Camp is a great time to "unplug." If you can, please leave electric and electronic devices at home. (Platform tents and yurts do not have electricity.) Adults who need to have cell phones should plan to turn them off or to silent/vibrate mode while participating in activities. Cell phone reception at camp is unreliable.

A sample schedule for family camp follows. You'll receive a detailed schedule with activity choices when you arrive. Activities and times are subject to change based on weather and other factors. All activities are optional, but please let us know if your family plans to leave camp or miss a meal. If you are unable to arrive at camp as scheduled, please call the camp at 603-899-5589 to schedule an alternate arrival. If you haven’t made alternate arrival plans and don’t arrive at camp on check-in day, we’ll contact you by phone to determine when to expect your arrival.

Session 4 Rocks On with JC's and LITs Too!

Good Evening Everyone,

Glad to see you're checking the blog again. What a gorgeous day we had today - a bit cooler but sunny and bright. We'll take another one tomorrow please!

Lot's of great stuff continues all over camp. Tonight the pesky Heffalumps visited again and our campers were hot on their trail, collecting signatures and watching out for Mama-lump. Ask your camper more about this wacky activity. Tomorrow, we'll complete our IGs and DGs and we'll have a barbecue for lunch - whoo hoo! Then, tomorrow night is our closing campfire, which always proves to be one of the highlights of the session.

I was off site for a bit yesterday and when I returned, my bike had been redecorated - see below. I love it!

The LITs and JCs have been very busy with all sorts of great stuff. For example, they helped us with our roadside clean-up of a stretch of Route 119. Thanks! They are a real joy to have with us. The LITs were a major part of our evening program tonight, and they always set the bar high with their creativitiy and enthusiasm!

We're down to the final couple days of this session, so I hope you're enjoying yourselves out there. We'll see you on Saturday morning! Until then, enjoy some of these images taken over the last two days at camp.

Thanks Peter, Kelsey, Rachel and Mia for helping with the pictures!

Session 4 Underway!

Hello Camper Families and Friends,

Well, Session 4 is off to a great start. We've had sunny mornings and a couple showers late in the afternoons so far, but nothing enough to change any of our activities, except it was a bit cool to go swimming during OATs today. We've got IGs and DGs in full gear and there's activities in all corners of camp. Last night we began our evening programs for this session with a lively game of Predator Prey - a huge camp favorite. Tonight is Unit Night, so each unit will be doing some special activites with their campers.

The Second-year LITs are currently working on a service project here at camp and you'll be able to see it when you return for pick-up. It's coming along very nicely! The Junior Counselors are busy this week shadowing groups and assiting at tables during meals. This, along with all the other great ways they assist us throughout the camp make us very lucky to have these both these groups with us!

We welcomed back the Maine Kayak Adventure yesterday afternoon after they spent their last day in Maine at Popham Beach, where they had a morning of R&R after a week of paddling down the Kennebeck River! They gave hugs all around this morning before heading back home - but not before they all headed to Kimballs for some ice cream! I didn't get to go... :-(

Tonight is "Bring a Letter to Dinner" night, so I better go and write mine, but take a look for some familar faces in the pictures below taken today and yesterday. We'll be back again, probably on Thursday for another edition. Keep those letters coming and we hope you're having a great week too!

Session 3 Special Event Day and More

Hello everyone not at camp! The good weather continues!!! :-)

Another beautiful day here at Wildwood - mostly sunny and mostly warm - just right! We can all begin to sense that the session is nearing its end. We're all making sure that we visit all areas of camp and have a chance to take part in anything we've missed so far. As I mentioned in my last post, Wednesday was our Special Event Day - "Detective Day" - and there was a special mystery to solve. Throughout the day, campers faced a variety of challenges leading to clues to solve the mystery. You'll have to ask about the details... There are quite a few images below from this fun day.

Today, we were back on the ropes course, in the sailboats, on the stage, in the field - basically everywhere on camp. Tomorow we'll complete our final IGs and DGs and get ready for closing campfire. The second week always goes by like a flash!

Our LITs and JCs are continuing to have such a positive impact on the camp too. Tonight the LITs will help with our evening program - "Capture the Flag" while the JCs have been busy helping with a variety of different things here at camp including assiting with programs, helping in the dining hall, and working on a service project to improve our DG board - nice!

I've heard twice from our trekker group too. As of last night, they were moving well down the river and had seen a couple bald eagles - one apparently challeging an osprey for a meal. They've navigated a few rapids already and have learned some new stroke techniques to better manage their boats while reducing fatigue. A few thunderstorms passed through their area yesterday, one producing a double rainbow! Wait - this just in - I just heard from them again tonight and they had another great day with yet another eagle sighting. They are in the Augusta area now so they are moving right along. It sounds like they are on good pace to make it to the sea in good time.

So that's the news from here. We hope your time is also going along nicely. We'll see you all in just a couple days! Enjoy it to the last second and we will too. Here's some images from the last few of days to enjoy. Thanks Mia and Peter for some help with the images.

Best,

Bob

Session 3 Rolls on - Plus Teen Programs

Hello everyone,

Wow, another terrific beginning to the week weatherwise! After a bit of rain on Friday night, our overnight camp programs enjoyed a beautiful Saturday and Sunday, both at Mt Monadnock and here. By lunchtime on Sunday, all groups had returned to camp ready for week #2 to begin. It's been quite nice again today, with a brief shower and some distant thunder moving through mid-afternoon, but then the sun returned again! We're off and running with our new schedule of IGs and DGs. As usual, we have a special day planned for Wednesday, and we'll be sure to collect pictures to share with you.

This was also a big weekend for our teen programs. On Saturday, we said good-bye to our first session of Junior Counselors that had spent four weeks with us. This terrific team helped out all over camp and made a huge impact on our staff and campers. It was tough to see them go, We also waved good-bye to our second group of LITs, who had spent the last two weeks working here at camp and also at a number of conservation lands and other areas conducting community service. It seemed like we were just getting to know them when their session ended. Lastly, we sent off the trekkers who had just gotten back from Vermont's Green Mountains and Lake Champlain. They had a really great time hiking some of the local peaks and learning about life in Champlain while rowing a pilot gig out to a few of the islands.

On Sunday, we welcomed a new group of Junior Counselors, which we'll have for the next four weeks, and they are off to an amazing start. As I write this, the evening program (Predator Prey) is underway and one of the JC's is each helping to lead a group. Sunday also brought us the group of second-year LITs. I spoke to the two LIT leaders this afternoon to ask how things were going and they gave me kind of a funny look - which concerned me for a moment - but then they told me that the problem is that the LITs were blowing through all the challenges that they had set up for the first couple of days. Way to go LITs! Lastly, we also welcomed our final teen trip group of the season, our Maine Kayaking Adventure. They left this morning for their 6 hour van ride to the drop-off point at Moosehead Lake. I had a call around 3:00 pm saying they had arrived safely and started setting up camp for the night. Tomorrow, they will begin the journey to the sea in kayaks. I know I'll be hearing from them and we'll keep you all updated with the news.

So, although there's lots of other great stories from camp, I'll stop here and let you check out some of the images from the past couple of days at camp. Remember, tomorrow is our second "Write a letter home" day, so you should be getting another letter soon. Keep yours coming too!

Best,  Bob

Session 3 - Beautiful Weather and Camp Fun!

Hello Session 3 parents and friends,

Another gorgeous day here at Wildwood today! Lots of sunshine and warm temps - just right! We're moving along with our IGs and DGs and regular camp schedule, but all that changes tomorrow. Both Abbey and Dillard Units will head up to Mt Monadnock after siesta tomorrow, where they'll spend two nights and two days exploring the area and climbing the mountain. Carson and Fossey will host their campouts here on the property while Leopold and Thoreau will have "Guys Night In", a fun time when they are the only ones on camp, so anything goes. On Saturday, they'll swap with the girls, and head out on ther camping trip, while the girls take over the camp. It's a busy weekend of really fun activities.

See below for some images of what's been happening at camp over the last couple of days. We've had some interesting evening programs tonight and last night. Last night we introduced a new game for this year - Nature's Wrath, with some weird looking characters, and tonight was Heffalump Hunt - a camp favorite.

Our Mass Audubon Day Camp visits continue as well. We hosted a nice group from Moose Hill for the past couple of days and now we've got another terrific group form the Boston Nature Center. They are having a great time tenting and exploring the camp and even Hubbard Pond by boat this afternoon.

Our Champlain Trek has also been having a terrific time. I last heard from them last night, after they arived at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and headed out on their pilot gig - a large rowing vessel. They headed out about a mile to the island where they spent the night last night and were planning to do a clean-up for their service project today. They will be heading back to the museum tomorrow before arriving back on camp sometime in the afternoon. I'm sure they'll have more stories about the trip when they return.

The LITs returned this afternoon from a successful canoe trip down the Connecticut River in Vermont and New Hampshire. All in all they paddled 20-something miles along the river, and had a great time together. Tonight they were back at it here at camp helping out with the evening program.

And last but certainly not least, our beloved Junior Counselors, that have worked very hard for the past four weeks will be packing up to head home this weekend. What a terrific group of young adults this first session was. We look forward to the next group as well, but we will not forget all the positive ways they've effected us over these weeks together. I really hope we see many of them applying to be counselors next year!

So, here's some pictures from the past couple of days. I hope you see a familiar face or two!

Have a terrific weekend and we'll be back again early next week after all the groups return.

Best, Bob

Session 3 - Champlain Teen Trip - LIT Canoe Trip - and JCs Take Over the Camp!

Hey Everyone! I hope you're week is off to a good start, because ours is!

Yesterday the Champlain Teen Trek got off and headed for the Green Mountains in Vermont where they will spend a couple days before heading to Lake Champlain. We'll be back with more details on their adventure as they come in.

This morning the LITs departed for their canoe trip on the Connecticut River in Vermont and New Hampshire. I just spoke to them and they arrived safely and are waiting out a bit of weather before they decide just how far they'll get down the river today.

Here at Wildwood Central, we've had a couple good days of camping fun. After going through all the first day stuff yesterday - tours, health checks, swim checks, etc. we had dinner and then a terrific game of Grab Bag. Today, we had a beautiful day up until OATs when we saw a little bit of rain and just enough distant thunder to keep the waterfront closed. But there were plenty of other great activities all over camp. Today is "Write a Letter Home Day", and I visited Leopold during siesta and saw them busily writing their letters - see photo below. It's also Unit Night tonight, which means that each of the units will have their own activities this evening.

As our current Junior Counselors bring their four-week session to an end this week, they led a number of our DGs today, which was fantastic! They brought new ideas and activities to a number of areas of camp and the campers loved it! They also hosted a group of Junior Counselors from the Seargent Camp up the road today and showed them around our camp where they worked together on the DGs.

A group of ten boys and two staff from Moose Hill is also visiting over the next couple of days. They'll have a great opportunity to enjoy our waterfront, ropes course, evening programs and more!

So, here's a few pictures from the day today, and we'll be back again soon with another update. Keep those letters and emails coming!

Session 2 Rolls Along

Hi Folks,

I don't need to tell you that it's been a hot week - with the hottest day probably being tomorrow, but we're having a great time here at Wildwood. The pond has been kind to us, especially on the warmer afternoons when we love to cool off, but we're also spending some good time sailing canoeing and kayaking as well.

Tomorrow we'll complete our IGs and it will be the last regular day of DGs and OATS too. Boy, this week has gone by quickly! Tomorow night is our closing campfire, and that should be a lot of fun!

The LITs have been very busy this week with a number of service projects. They helped with our two miles of adopted road here in Rindge by doing a roadside clean-up and then helped to remove some unwanted vegetation at a local park too. There was some press coverage at the park today, so I will send out the link as soon as I get it. There sould be some pictures in there as well.

The JCs continue on with their terrific work here on the camp. Tonight, they are having a fun camp-out on Second Point. They've been assisting in a number of camp programs this week, and they'll be back at it tomorrow too.

Lastly, our trek group has spent the week exploring the White Mountains. Tuesday and Wednesday they climbed Rumney Rocks and today they hiked in to one of the campsites to spend the night. Tomorrow they will hike back out before returning to Wildwood. I cant wait to hear more about their adventures!

Well, enough talk, lets get to some pictures from around camp during the last couple of days.

Enjoy and we'll see you Saturday morning!

Thanks to Peter and Mia for helping with the pictures.
