The Bufflehead is a common sight on Cape Cod during the winter. You will find these wintering ducks on lakes harbors and bays. They are usually found in small flocks. They are small and bob around quite a bit. The Bufflehead is small and measure about 13-15 inches in overall length. The bufflehead is one of the most active diving ducks. Diving ducks feed themselves by diving underwater and searching for plants, shellfish and fish.
The male Bufflehead has a large white patch across the back of the head that extends from cheek to cheek. The gleaming white might catch your eye even at a great distance. The remainder of the head is black in color with an iridescent green and purplish sheen. The back and rump are black. The breast, scapulars, breast, belly and sides are white. The bill is bluish gray. The feet are a very distinctive pinkish color and best observed in flight. The only other somewhat similar duck is the Hooded Merganser.
The female Bufflehead shows less contrasting colors than males. They have a dark brown head and neck with grayish sides. The female has an oval ear patch located below and just back behind the eye that extends backwards. The female bill is dark gray.
These photographs were taken at Falmouth Harbor.
